Weekend Warrior

Or just plain crazy

Saturday’s workout with my trainer, Jeff, was nothing short of amazing? Crazy? Awesome? It was good. We worked on some serious lifting. I am surprised I could move the next day, lol.

We worked on squats, dead lifting, and bench pressing. All in one day; which is unusual. Like I told you last week, that bench press is going to need A LOT of work, but I’m sure it will get better. I did set new PR’s for squats and the dead lift. Just to see what I could do Jeff jumped my squat weight from 105-135 pounds! I told you I think he’s trying to do me in, lol. Jeff didn’t get a picture of that; he wanted to make sure to spot me incase I couldn’t do it.

We then moved on to the bench press. Now I told you I was weak in that, but, I can press just the bar pretty good…all 45 pounds of it, lol! We tried adding 20 pounds to it and it wasn’t very pretty….so we took it down to 55 and I managed to get it fairly decent. I most certainly have a lot of work to do.

After that we moved on over to the dead lift. I’m not sure, but I might enjoy that; just a little bit….We went through a few lifts of “lite” weight. Then moved on up. After a few lifts I had to visit the facilities (nothing new there) and when I came back Jeff had racked on some new weights. I wasn’t exactly sure of what the amount was, but I knew it was more than I had ever done. I approached and tried, but just couldn’t pull it. It was 175 pounds. We took off 10 and I went to lift it for one pull! Jeff, did manage to get a video. I think it is much better than last weeks over all.

I’m still not sure why last weeks was so “sloppy” on such lite weight. I still think it was in part to being “finished” then going back to doing a quick round for videoing. I guess it still remains to be seen. If you missed last weeks post and video you can see it here. Let me know what you think.

If this craziness with Jeff isn’t enough; I have decided to go from training once a week with him to twice a week….so I will now work Jeff on Saturday and Wednesday Nights; is this smart or just plain crazy? I guess we will see. I must be a glutton for punishment!

Sunday morning, I got up and ran. It was the first time in a couple of weeks. It was the first time in a very long time, I felt good about it. I didn’t run fast (ok, really, do I ever) but it wasn’t my slowest either. I didn’t run far, but farther than the last time.

When I got up Sunday morning I was going determined I was going to get out and run. I did. I must admit, I have had a hard time getting motivated to start training for the marathon. Why I just don’t know, but I have not been able to get my head around it. Maybe because it is so far out, which is true, but I need to build up my base. I cannot do that sitting on my rear end. Maybe this is going to be my last running hurrah? I don’t know. I am still in a bit of a funk and I need something to pull me out.

As I got ready to go on Sunday, something felt different. I fueled, I got dressed and as I was getting things together; I felt almost giddy with excitement. Have I turned the corner? I don’t know, but I started thinking about when I was going to run again, getting out my training book to start logging workouts (then decided I needed a new book for a new year; Hello Amazon!). I ordered it and it should be here today!! Yay! It is the little things…

It was very overcast, but it was humid. I sweated. In a tank top. I never sweat. It was kind of nice. Maybe. Just. Maybe. “I’m gonna make it after all”….

Run Rest Repeat

Night/Evening runs are always the hardest

This is me. Run Rest Repeat. I started out as an interval runner, before I ever heard the term, I imagine I will always be an interval runner. It works for me. I have some training runs where I push myself to run through several sets of intervals, but I always come back to them. There are elite runners who have won marathons by running intervals. There is no shame in my game!

I ran last night a rare occurrence, running during the week, at night. Night/Evening runs are always the hardest. Why, I don’t know, but they are. My legs usually feel like lead, I have a hard time getting my breathing just right. They are just hard. I should probably do them more often….Fortunately they are short too. I am most definitely a morning runner.

Tuesday is one of my usual yoga nights. I was waffling off and on all day about going or not. When I decided to get ready and go, I signed in to register only to find out there was a sub for the class. Some subs are ok, some I don’t care for so much. Since I decided I wasn’t going to class, I put my pajamas on since I wasn’t planning to go anywhere else. I figured I would have a bit of quiet time to work on the blog and some social media “stuff”.

My daughter came home from work and mentioned going for a short run before the kids got home with their dad. So I actually changed out of my “jams” and into running clothes (I’m impressed)….AND I ran without music! I did set my interval timer and kept it where I moved it to on Sunday. That was a smart decision as overall the run was tough. We only ran a mile but it was a hard one. I know as I get back into a routine it will get better.

Tonight I will do my weight routine. I have been neglecting that for a few weeks too. Jeff, my personal trainer, fusses at me every week about that…I’m sure “The Man” would be happy to see me use some of those weights I just had to buy, lol! Ok, really, he never sees me use them. Since he works nights and is already asleep when I use them at night, he never knows….except that one night I dropped a medicine ball and woke him up…oops! Last week I did start back with a portion of it, so I’m getting there; slowly but surely.

The subscriber list is growing each day, as are Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest. That’s because you are commenting and sharing my ramblings with your friends. I really do appreciate that. When you take your time to read the blog, and then like and comment on my postings it helps more people to see it, and I guess some of them like what I have to say too….

I hope your week is going well, so far. Let me know what you’ve been up too.

Marathon Training has Commenced

Don’t Think Just Go

Saturday morning came and off I went to the weekly meeting of the #saturday7amsocialclub AKA Weight Watchers.  It was the first meeting of the month and I had to weigh in to establish my free lifetime status for April. I did that successfully, but I was up 1 lb from my March weigh in. In actuality I was down from where I had been the week before. I had a couple of weeks of eating and enjoying too much “stuff”.

I left there and headed off to the gym and my regularly scheduled session with, my personal trainer, Jeff. Who promptly informed me; “I’ve shifted gears in your training regime, we have a marathon to get ready for”. Really? What? No, we have plenty of time, really we do; I mean it’s 30 weeks away, really it is, I’ve done the math. Granted, it was “old math” not that “new math” so there may be some margin for error, but…..Uh huh! Let’s go pick up some heavy stuff…we are going to do squats; well of course we are…what’s new?

So off we went to warm up and get started; with back squats. Do you know what back squats are? Yeah, you squat with a bar of weights on your shoulders….but Jeff is kind-hearted, we start with the just the bar and no weights…it is only 45 pounds. Then after a set of those, usually 8 reps, we start adding weight. This week we maxed it at 95 pounds (I should be grateful he had uttered 100+ lbs). I did two sets of 5 reps, then on the third set he told me to do the max I could. I made it to 15 reps before he stopped me! Apparently that wasn’t enough squats, we moved on to goblet squats. He gave me a 22.5 pound dumbbell to start with. I laughed at him…it honestly felt like air. I guess after 95 pounds?….. The next time it might not feel so lite…and I probably should have just rolled with it; he grabbed a 40 pounder (you probably shouldn’t laugh at your trainer)! Even that started out feeling pretty lite, until we got to the end. I guess I have gotten stronger, just don’t tell Jeff! We’ll keep it our secret.

My daughter, Amanda, and I talked about how we had to get back to our Sunday runs. We planned to get up and go early ish Sunday morning. I woke up at 2:30 and couldn’t get back to sleep. By 3:30 I gave up and got out of bed. Anticiapation? Hahaha….By the time it was daylight I had talked myself into not going this week. After all, I have time. Amanda, got up and talked herself into waiting too. I headed up stairs, and looked at my running shoes. I have motivational tags on them that say:

So what could I do? I got myself ready and headed downstairs, and asked if she was ready. What? “I thought we were going to wait”? Yeah, no, don’t think-just go! And off we went. Two miles. Ok, Amanda, did two miles. I left her and logged another half a mile. I just had too. Once I get out the door, most of the time I can add to what I planned to do; unless it’s during hard-core training. Then I do what the plan calls for. All in all it was a good run. It was a bit chilly, but not too cold, the sun was out. That always makes it better. Sunday Runday has returned! I hope I’m this excited in September when I have to do a 20 mile training run!

Almost home!

Selfies are not my forte’. Moving selfies even less, so lol!

Yesterdays run was not fast by any stretch. Ok, none of my runs are ever fast, but this one was back to some slower times. I played around with my intervals and backed my run time and walk time down. I am hoping to tweak it to help increase my speed. Since I have a bit of time to work with it, now is a good time to start. I took my run time back too far, so next week I will bring it back up some, and leave the walk time where it’s at. I’ll keep you posted on the results.

One of my running mottos/mantras. I got this just before I ran my first marathon. I have always played that George Jones song: “I Don’t Need Your Rocking Chair” several times during my runs. It keeps me going. That’s in part what the saying is for. The other reason is I had not run that marathon yet, but the girls (my daughter and DIL) had run their first one already. Since I’m a slow runner, the turtle, and I was on my way. I was running towards that goal.

So that was my weekend. What did you do fun this weekend? I’d love to hear from you! Who’s ready to start training with me? I promise we will go slow.

Remember you can follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram. They are all growing like crazy, and that’s because y’all have been liking and sharing my adventures. I really appreciate that.

I Won the Lottery

I can honestly say I was shocked

You may remember me sharing that I entered the lottery a couple of weeks ago for the Marine Corps Marathon-MCM? Well, I got in! I suppose that means I won the lottery, right? If nothing else it means;  I’m running a marathon in October!!! What was I thinking? I wasn’t. I really didn’t think I would get in. People sometimes enter multiple times before they get selected. Me? First time! What kind of luck is that? My daughter entered and was selected too! At least I won’t be alone. Misery loves company? I have a running goal now? I need my head examined? All of the above?

The emails were supposed to start rolling out at noon on Thursday 3/30. Early in the morning I checked the bank. I knew they would bill the card before sending out the email. Lets face it, if you didn’t have money to pay, they weren’t going to bother. The card had been charged, so I know I was in “unofficially”. In my mind I knew it was a done deal. They don’t charge your card and then reverse it, but unitl I saw that email, it was not official.

At first I was downright giddy, and I can honestly say I was shocked. Then a short time later I had my aha moment. My OMG, what have I done, moment? I have to run a marathon! What was I thinking? I have to train for a marathon; 26.2 miles, that must be completed in 6:30 hours! I clearly wasn’t thinking too clearly. Yes, I have run a marathon. I even finished it in less than 6:30. I crossed that finish line in a whopping 6:29:32!!!! Why of course I can do it in 6:30!

The difference, at least I’m telling myself is when I ran my first and last marathon, I was registered for the half knowing I could upgrade if I trained for it and was ready. And that’s what I did. This time I’m in for the whole enchilada. There is no downgrading, deferring; etc. I am in like Flynn! Oh boy! Sunday Runday is back! It should make for some interesting stories….Stay tuned, it’s about to get real up in here! I suppose I better really look at the calendar and start working on a real training plan; of sorts.

In other news; the subscriber list is still growing. The Facebook page has hit over 300 followers! That’s thanks to you and your support with liking, commenting, and sharing. Maybe a couple of people like what I have to say, now and again. If you haven’t subscribed already, just click follow at the bottom of your screen and get signed up. You can also share the blog on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. I also have an Instagram set up as Grandma2Glamma, but I haven’t set up a link to that yet.  I’m not techie enough to do more than one thing a week, lol, and I’m running a marathon!!

I hope y’all have had a nice weekend. Do you have any exciting news to share? If so, I’d love to hear about it. Leave a comment and tell me what’s going on.

Until the next time
